The approximately 260 Soldiers of the Utah Army National Guard’s First Battalion, 211th Aviation depart Utah on the first leg of their 12-month deployment to Afghanistan Monday, January 16, from the Utah Guard’s Army Aviation Support Facility in West Jordan. The 211th will be providing attack and reconnaissance support to units stationed with Central Command in Afghanistan.

A UH-72 Lakota takes off from the helipads of the Wells Fargo building in Salt Lake City, Feb. 10, 2019. Working with multiple agencies, the Utah National Guard conducted several passes and landings with two UH-60 Black Hawks and a UH-72 Lakota on the North and South helipads of the Wells Fargo building. Exercise Desert Ice began in 2005 and was developed into a multiservice, multinational training event designed to fortify the nation's security against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.

Federal Mission: The 97th Aviation Troop Command provides trained, ready and equipped personnel and units capable of combat deployment, officially declared national emergencies or when called upon to augment the Active Army.

State Directed Mission:  The 97th Aviation Troop Command commands, controls, and supervises assigned Utah Army National Guard units employed in support of civil authorities in the protection of life and property and the preservation of peace, order, and public safety under the lawful orders of state authorities.
