To the Soldiers and Airmen of the Utah National Guard,

After the terrible death of George Floyd, our nation has experienced an eruption of anger over racial inequality. Not only is the issue of racial inequality terrible because it is rooted in prejudice and ignorance, but it also threatens to divide us at a time when we need to be united against the many external threats we face in a volatile world.

As service members, your duty remains first and foremost to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. Many of you are feeling pain, frustration, and even anger over recent events. Regardless of private feelings, our role as service members is to remain neutral and to faithfully serve our state and nation as needed.

The Utah National Guard has and continues to respond to civil unrest in our neighborhoods and communities here and in our nation’s capital. Make no mistake, this is one of the most difficult missions we face. As difficult as it may be, it is one we are trained and ready to do. I have faith and confidence in your ability to be uncompromising in our values while maintaining compassion and understanding for our citizens and the complex issues facing our nation.

Our organization has a long tradition of excellence. You are the reason for that excellence. I am proud of your professionalism, your selflessness, and your discipline. Remain steadfast in your integrity to each other, our communities, and the mission. It is on this momentous anniversary of D-Day, that I thank each and every one of you for your honorable service throughout these trying times.
