Utah National Guard’s 1457th Forward Support Company to participate as finalists in national Connelly Food Services competition

By Maj. Chris Kroeber 1457th Forward Support Company

The Utah National Guard’s 1457th Forward Support Company is scheduled to compete as finalists in the U.S. Army’s Phillip A. Connelly Award competition at Camp Williams, Utah, Feb. 24-25, 2023.

The Phillip A. Connelly Award is given to the Army’s food service units that excel in food presentation, dining experiences, and service across all Army food service platforms in garrison and field environments. The 1457th FSC has advanced to the “Final Four” after performing exceptionally well in the previous round of judging during their annual training at Dinosaur National Monument last summer. Judges from the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C. will come to Camp Williams on Feb. 24 and 25 to judge the final round.

“The field feeding section represents the best in the Army food service industry as demonstrated by their performance last summer at the region-level Connelly competition” said Lt. Col. Jaime Thomas, commander of the 1457th Engineer Battalion. “This weekend, they will be able to demonstrate their culinary expertise and capabilities by conducting food operations in a cold weather environment during the national-level competition. Their dedication and commitment to excellence epitomizes the values the 1457th Engineer Battalion and the Utah National Guard."

The culminating event of the competition is scheduled for noon on Saturday, Feb. 25, and will consist of implementing a food services plan, preparing a lunch meal and ultimately serving the meal to Soldiers training in the field.

The Utah National Guard is a premier, community-based force comprised of relevant and trained citizen-Soldiers and Airmen who are ready to support operations within the state and throughout the world.
