Utah National Guard battery recognized as best in the nation.
DRAPER, Utah – The Utah National Guard’s Alpha Battery,1st Battalion 145th Field Artillery Regiment is scheduled to receive the 2023 Alexander Hamilton Award during a ceremony at Camp Williams Apr. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon.
The Alexander Hamilton Award was created in 2002 and is named after American statesman and Continental Army artilleryman Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton was an outstanding artillery battery commander and an aide to Gen. George Washington during the Revolutionary War. He shaped the Constitution and served as the nation's first treasury secretary. The annual award recognizes the most outstanding National Guard field artillery battery in the country. Soldiers were evaluated on mission execution, training, deployment service, equipment maintenance, logistics programs, fitness, family readiness and community service from October 2022 through September 2023.
The Utah National Guard’s Alpha Battery 1-145th Field Artillery Regiment has its origins in the earliest field artillery units in Utah dating back to 1854. The unit first gained the designation 145th Field Artillery in 1917. It was organized and entered federal service in October 1917 at Camp Kearny, California and became a component of the 65th Field Artillery Brigade, of the 40th Division.
Soldiers from 1st Battalion 145th Field Artillery Regiment, will be shooting live rounds from M109A6 Paladin howitzers as part of award ceremony. Artillery fire will occur sporadically throughout the day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
