By Lt. Col. Jaime Thomas Utah Army National Guard

The Utah Army National Guard will welcome its new assistant adjutant general during the change-of-command ceremony scheduled to occur Sunday, March 13, at 3 p.m. in the Draper headquarters’ auditorium.

During the ceremony, Brig. Gen. Tyler B. Smith will relinquish the role of assistant adjutant general of the Utah Army National Guard to Col. (promotable) Joseph W. Green. Prior to the change of command, Green will be promoted to the rank of brigadier general.

Green, an American Fork resident, has served as the chief of staff for the Utah Army National Guard since Aug. 2019. Prior to this assignment, Green served as the commander of the 300th Military Intelligence Brigade (Linguist). He also served as the commander of the Utah National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, and chief, Intelligence Disciplines Division in the Plans and Integration Directorate in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Intelligence, Headquarters, Department of the Army, as well as a variety of staff and leadership positions. Green joined the Utah Army National Guard in 1993. He deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2008, and received the Bronze Star Medal for his overseas service.

"The Utah National Guard has a long history of service to the citizens of the state of Utah and our nation, and I am tremendously grateful to have served with Soldiers and leaders who demonstrate commitment and patriotism in everything they do,” said Green. “We have a lot of work to do ahead of us, and so as I take command of the Utah Army National Guard, we will be focusing on the training and readiness our Soldiers need in order to meet the complex challenges that lie ahead."

Smith, a Fountain Green resident, has served as the assistant adjutant general for the Utah Army National Guard since July 2, 2018.

“Serving as the assistant adjutant general-Army has been the most fulfilling of all my assignments throughout my career,” said Smith. “I consider myself extremely fortunate because this assignment has given me countless opportunities to interact with and see in action the greatest Soldiers you’ll find anywhere. One fundamental role of general officers is to inspire those in their command. I must say that it is I that am inspired by the extraordinary men and women who are serving so superbly in our communities, state, nation, and across the globe.”

Smith is scheduled to be honored with a retirement ceremony on Tuesday, March 15, at 2:30 p.m. at the Scott Lundell Readiness Center, Camp Williams, Utah.
